Low-Voltage Lighting

LV lighting

Low-voltage lighting operates below line voltage; the NEC's Article 411 framework covers listed systems up to 30 VAC or 60 VDC. In commercial practice the term spans two distinct architectures — PoE lighting over Cat5/Cat6 cable and 48V connected lighting over 16/2 or 18/2 conductors — plus wireless controls. These architectures are not interchangeable.

What it is

Low-voltage lighting is the umbrella category, not a single system. NEC 411.3 sets the voltage limits and 411.4 requires listing; conduit flexibility under Article 725 depends on local amendments and plenum ratings.

How it differs

Not residential low-voltage lighting. In homes, "low voltage" usually means 12V landscape, under-cabinet, or track lighting run off a plug-in transformer. In commercial buildings it means a powered infrastructure layer - PoE over Cat5/Cat6, or 48V connected lighting over 16/2 - carrying both power and control data to addressable fixtures across a floorplate.
