BACnet/IP

BACnet over IP; ASHRAE 135

BACnet/IP is the Ethernet and UDP implementation of ASHRAE Standard 135 (ISO 16484-5), the open, vendor-neutral protocol that dominates building automation. Lighting systems expose objects such as occupancy and energy over UDP port 47808, with BTL listing as the conformance proof.

What it is

The security caveat lives on this page deliberately: legacy BACnet/IP lacks protocol-level authentication and encryption, and most deployed networks remain unencrypted. Candor is the trust play competitors avoid.

Conformance requires BTL-listed devices and per-project validation — never 'plug-and-play with any BMS.'
