A Class 2 circuit is a power-limited circuit defined in NEC Article 725, capped at 100 volt-amperes and typically 30 volts or less. Because its energy is limited enough to reduce fire and shock risk, Class 2 wiring can often run without conduit — subject to plenum ratings, local amendments, and the authority having jurisdiction.
Class 2 limits are what allow low-voltage lighting's installation flexibility, but the details are jurisdictional: plenum ratings (CL2P/CMP), local amendments, and the adopted NEC edition all govern.
PoE at 44–57V exceeds the 30V ceiling — compliance runs through Article 411 and LP listings or Class 4, which is why 'is PoE a Class 2 circuit' has its canonical answer on this page.
